The streets of London News: Call to ban cars at Hyde Park Corner THE suggestion that cars should be banned from Hyde Park Corner marks a worrying point in the development of London. Ugly as cars can be, traffic is what the streets of London were designed for, even if it was the clatter of hooves, not the rumble of engines, that was originally envisaged. Some places
were designed exclusively for pedestrians: if, in Napoleon's words, St
Mark's Square, Venice, is the drawing-room of Europe, that is in part because,
as is the way with drawing-rooms, it has never had a road running through
it.
