Call to ban cars
at Hyde Park Corner
Daily Telegraph: The streets of London ENGLISH Heritage hints today that it is in favour of banning traffic from Hyde Park Corner, one of the country's busiest "roundabouts". In an interview with The Telegraph, Sir Neil Cossons, the new chairman of the organisation, said the landmark deserves to be "more than just a traffic gyratory". His comments come as the £1.5 million year-long restoration of Wellington Arch, marooned in the centre of the junction and accessible only by underpass or across four lanes of traffic, nears completion. Sir Neil believes the restoration should trigger a radical reassessment
of the area. He said: "We shouldn't rule out the idea of banning cars from
Hyde Park Corner at certain times." About 100,000 vehicles go round Hyde
Park Corner on any weekday. Westminster city council said the idea of a
ban was "laughable".
