Dear Sir/Madam,

I am confident that one day even the Daily Telegraph’s editors will realise that the bill recently passed by the German Bundestag (parliament) to combat society’s irresponsible throwaway mentality, by requiring a deposit to be paid on all canned and bottled drinks, is one of the most sensible pieces of legislation to be passed by any government in a long time.

The new law will also greatly help to tidy up Germany’s parks and public places, which, as in Britain, are often littered with discarded cans and bottles, and cost the municipal authorities a fortune to clean up - which, however, they do far more than in Britain, which is shabby in comparison.

What a pity that your Berlin correspondent had to present the news in such a negative tone: “GERMAN MPs attempted to destroy the market for canned drinks yesterday by doubling their retail price, voting to impose a 15p minimum deposit on each can.” (German recycling levy on all cans, 19 May 2001).

I wonder how long it will be before Britain follows Germany’s good example. Not too long, I hope.
