Re: The Home Secretary's good example of bad behaviour
Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000

Dear Sir,

If even the Home Secretary does not bother keeping to the speed limit - and I cannot imagine that his driver could be doing more than 30 mph over the limit without his consent - then why should anyone else?  (Jack
Straw's Jaguar stopped at 103mph by police, 21 July 2000).

If Jack Straw's speeding vehicle had been involved in a fatal accident, there would be a public outcry: he would have to resign and his driver could probably look forward to a few years in jail. But as it is, both will get away with a ticking off.

The message to us all is simple: provided you do not cause a serious accident speeding is just a trivial offence.

And thus the deaths caused through speeding on our roads will continue.
