SIR - It is about time that the British police were armed [Crime: Gun-toting image raises fears for old bobbies, 24 October 2000].

What have we been trying to prove by standing by out truncheons? How can you expect to have credible law enforcement when all they have is a stick and a pepper spray? Well done Nottingham and the sooner the rest of the country follows suit the better.

And to those of you who think the police will become trigger happy, this is not necessarily so. There are (or will be) rules of engagement. Better to carry a firearm and never need to use it, then not to have it at all.
