SIR - Mr Roger Hicks proposes a maximum wage, and asks who thinks themselves to be worth more than ten nurses [Maximum wage, Feedback, 21 March 2000].

I don't know anyone who imagines themselves to be worth more than ten nurses in the moral sense, but economics is not the same thing as morality.

Mr Hicks should ask himself how Britain could prosper if no-one could afford to invest more than ten times what a nurse can afford to invest.

He might also ask himself how many entrepreneurs would remain in the UK under his proposed regime, and as a result how many jobs for nurses there would be.
