Re: What blinds us to our stupidity
Date: Monday, 2 May 05

Dear Sir/Madam,

Perhaps what blinds us is having given ourselves the wrong name: Homo sapiens, when it should have been Homo stupidus. Americans, like the Europeans they are largely descended from, belong to the subspecies, Homo stupidus economicus (The $6.66-a-Gallon Solution).

It is difficult for us to comprehend just how stupid we are (all of us), but for our children’s sake we urgently need to do so, because we are quite literally plundering our planet, destroying the very basis of our own existence.

The American administration is deeply in denial, as are the Americans who elected it, while you at the NYT are less deeply in denial, but in denial nevertheless.

If we do not come out of denial soon, this is going to be an even worse century than the last one. It may even be our last.
