SIR - Perhaps the lack of interest from young people in history is because they are expected to learn irrelevant details, like the number of wives Henry VIII had or the length of Queen Victoria's reign [History is a mystery for the young, 10 November 2001].

The teaching of history in schools has for too long been mono-cultural and one sided. It is a truism that learning the lessons of the past prevent us from repeating the mistakes of former generations. However, we can only truly describe ourselves as learned when we take into account the development of civilisations across the globe.
