Re: Too deep in denial to face the contradictions between economy and ecology

Date: Wednesday 10 November 04

Dear Sir/Madam,

"Jet pollution must be cut in climate fight, warn peers", reads a headline in today's Guardian.

The main pollutant from aviation is CO2, which cannot be significantly reduced without reducing the number flights. Yet the British government is promoting and planning for a massive increase in flights over the coming decades.

When are we going to come out of denial and face up to the contradictions between our economy (the household of man) and ecology (the household of our planet)?

The longer we leave it the more difficult it will become - and the more desperate our situation.

It is difficult to face up to because it will necessitate making radical changes to our economy and lifestyles, as well as to many of the values, attitudes and aspirations which underlie them.

Where to start?
