Dear Sir/Madam,

Why do we have such a childish preoccupation with speed and the need to be faster than others (Study on 225mph north-south rail link to overtake Europe, 20 January 2001)?

We need to slow down, rather than speed up.

And besides, the majority of people, I am sure, would much rather see their taxes and fares invested in an extensive, efficient and affordable integrated national public transport system than in a few fast, but expensive lines.
