Dear Sir/Madam,

Boeing’s decision to drop its plans for a high-speed airplane in favour of designing a fuel-efficient aircraft reminds me of my decision, as a young man, to stop smoking.

I’d like to be able to say that my decision was based primarily on my awareness of the health hazard and my good sense and determination in wanting to avoid it - but it wasn’t. It was economic considerations: the habit was costing me a significant proportion of my meagre income.

Like me, Boeing has made the right decision, not necessarily for wrong reasons, but certainly not for the most important and pressing one: awareness of the non-sustainability of the American economic and lifestyle model on our finite and vulnerable planet, Spaceship Earth, and a determination to change it for the sake of our children and coming generations.
