Re: Prince Harry's misdemeanour
Date: Sunday 9 January 05

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would just like to express my heart-felt disapproval, not of Prince Harry wearing a Nazi uniform to a private fancy-dress party, but at the fuss being made about it in the media. I share entirely the attitude expressed by  Aaron Barschak in today's (Friday's) Guardian (Harry's game).

Although, while I'm about it, let me also express my disgust and contempt (also heart-felt) for those who made this private matter public (the photographer and the editor of the Sun newspaper) and for the thoroughly rotten socio-economic order (so wonderfully "British"!) which drove them to it.

Hitler would not have come to power without the support of people who disapproved of or were indifferent to his ideology, but believed he would be good for business. I strongly suspect that many of those making the most self-righteous and self-serving fuss now - especially amongst the media - transported back to Germany of the 1930's, would conduct themselves most shamefully.

P.S. (17 Jan) I chanced to tune into Radio 4's "Any Questions?" yesterday afternoon and was depressed and angered to hear the 4 guests (Robin Cook, John Bercow, David Bell and Julia Hardy-Brewer) slagging off Prince Harry in brutally self-righteous tones for his choice of fancy dress costume. However, my mood changed and I was greatly heartened when the programme was followed by "Any Answers?", where listeners email or phone in to give their views on the topics commented on by the guests.  According to the presenter, Nick Clark, the vast majority were in support of Prince Harry, condemning those who were making such a fuss of the matter. Many of the attitudes they expressed were right on the nail as far as I was concerned. It was a great relief and pleasure to me to learn that it is the media and those most closely involved with it (especially politicians), rather than the general (Radio 4-listening) British public, where there is a preponderance of such nauseating attitudes.
