Re: Madness behind the madness: putting economy before ecology
Date: Thursday 18 August 05

Dear Editor,

In today's editorial, "Another Methane Move", you lament that the Bush administration "is [basing] its energy policy entirely on expansion, extraction and consumption, with little thought for conservation or the environment".

They are giving priority to the economy (and making money), which is what most people expect government to encourage companies and individuals to do. Is "wealth creation" (expressed in dollars) not our absolute measure of individual, corporate and national success?

There is a lot of money to be made from extracting oil, gas or whatever and selling it for consumption. You don't make money by leaving it in the ground.

It is high time we faced up to the conflict of interests that exist between our economy (the household of man) and ecology (the household of nature), which we have been in denial of for far too long.
