Re: The British Army's noble stand against Page-3 pinups
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001

Dear Sir/Madam,

A good soldier knows when it is time to retreat and when it is time to make a stand.

To the British Army:

You helped free the world of fascism, you defended us against the threat of Communist tyranny, and now you have  made a moral stand and said very clearly that being a Page-3 pinup is not compatible with being in the British Army (Topless soldier is discharged, News in Brief, 14 March 2001).

You have given me fresh reason to be proud of you. Well done!

And when the good "lady" takes you to court for unfair dismissal, please, please stand firm. Do not surrender. This is a matter of principle that really is worth fighting and, if need be, dying for!

Topless soldier is discharged
THE woman soldier who posed topless for a newspaper has been discharged from the Army, the Ministry of Defence said last night. L/Cpl Roberta Winterton, 20, appeared as a Page 3 girl in The Sun just days after it emerged that L/Bdr Heidi Cochrane, a married soldier whose picture was used by the Army to promote female recruitment, had gone absent without leave from her base in Cyprus with another soldier. A spokesman said: "If you want to be a Page 3 girl you should do it full-time, not while you are in the Army. The two professions are not compatible."
