Dear
Mr Blair, I
understand that there will
soon be an announcement
relating to the review of
voting systems. I
sincerely hope that you will
give your support to a much
fairer and more representative
system of proportional
representation. The
system we have at the moment
is archaic and – from a
voter’s (certainly my) point
of view – little more than a
joke. If I vote at all it is
for the lesser of a small
choice of evils, not because I
feel that any one candidate
represents my own (admittedly
unconventional) political
views. None of the candidates
for my constituency come
anywhere near to representing
my views. Given the way the
system works, it would be
astonishing if any of them
did. The
Americans began their
revolution because they
didn’t feel represented in
the British parliament. Well,
neither do I! I
want to be able to vote for
someone who comes as close as
possible to representing my
own political views. Whether
they live next-door to me or
on the other side of the
country is irrelevant. Proportional
representation is the decent,
fair and democratic way to go,
even if it is not the easiest
when it comes to forming
governments. However, the prospect of perhaps having to form coalition governments should be seen, not as a threat, but as a welcome challenge to our political maturity. Yours
sincerely Roger Hicks |
