Dear Sir/Madam,

From my letter, which you kindly published in today's Feedback section, you edited out the word "viscously" contained in the sentence I wrote about ". . the Republicans [being the ones who should] back off . . . . instead of clinging desperately to what is not yet theirs, and stop lashing out so viscously and unjustly at their opponents" (Feedback, "See you in court", 14 November 2000).

However, Janet Daley's contribution to today's Comment and Opinion confirms the correctness of my choice of words (The liberal elite's plan for a second civil war, 14 November 2000).

The Republicans - and many of their supporters - simply assume that Governor Bush has won the presidential election and are reacting with extreme hostility to anyone suggesting that it might be otherwise. The way Mrs Daley attacks Al Gore in her article is insulting and deplorable.

She should be ashamed of herself, and the Telegraph with her for publishing such an unreasonable,  rude and inflammatory article.
