A letter to
the Archbishop
of Canterbury
in response to
a report in
Tuesday's
Times: "In a
rare foray
into politics,
Dr Rowan
Williams
warned
political
leaders that
they would
face "a heavy
responsibility
before God" if
they failed to
tackle the
problem of
global
warming"
Dear
Archbishop (Dr
Williams),
It is not
God's
judgement that
I fear for
what we are
doing to our
planet
(despite
centuries of
Christian
threats), but
that of my
children and
grandchildren.
Perhaps, if
your
Judeo-Christian (concept
of) God hadn't
"cursed us"
for venturing
out of the
animal kingdom
(beautifully
described in
the story of
Adam and Eve),
but instead,
praised,
encouraged and
advised us on
how to take
responsibility
for our
behaviour, by now
we might be
better able to
do so.
Instead, He
filled us with
guilt by
treating us
like the
animal we need
to transcend:
“Do what I (my
priests) tell
you and I will
reward you;
don't, and you
will be
punished!”, thus
keeping us
compliant and
obedient to
(priestly)
authority.
This has
resulted in a
socio-economic
order based
largely on our
animal nature,
which
free-market
capitalism has
developed and
been honed to
exploit and
depend upon.
Which is why
we spend
billions of
dollars
encouraging
ourselves, who
are already
affluent
enough, to
demand even
and ever more, while
others are
starving, and
why we are plundering and
spoiling our
planet.
Yours
sincerely
Roger Hicks
