SIR - I read with interest Mr Blair's comments that the proposed DNA data base '. . . will help cut car crime. A single hair left in a stolen car is enough to identify the thief.' [Make all suspects give DNA, says Blair, 29 November 1999]

I would love to hear just how this single hair will be found and tagged for examination. This is a particularly sore point as my son had a car stolen from outside his home last week.

The police were not willing to attend the scene and recover a hacksaw that had been used in the theft and left in the car.

When my son requested that the car be fingerprinted he was advised that there was no point as the car was left in the public domain (where else are cars abandoned?) and that the scene of crime officer works only on weekdays and as it was a Saturday was not available.

This is another example of political nonsense that will cost the taxpayer a lot of wasted money as the police will often never find the "single hair" in the first place.
