Fortune favours the young

International: Former Playboy model wins £310m share of oil fortune

The decision to award $449 million to Anna Nicole Smith, who married J Howard Marshall, an oil billionaire, when he was 89 and she was a 25-year-old stripper, may raise eyebrows. It is in fact a heartening legal endorsement of the importance of marriage - the sort of endorsement that should be held up as a model over here, where tax laws are so rarely a friend to wedlock.

  •  Sophocles was delighted to have "escaped a mad and savage master" when his sex drive failed in old age. But, given that Mr Marshall, a single man in possession of a good fortune, was still a willing slave to that master when he married, why shouldn't he have picked such an alluring bride as Miss Smith? It is only right that she should be rewarded with the legacy that is the just entitlement of any widow.
