Dear Sir/Madam,

Reading the article “Europe Builds Itself Up at Bush's Expense” by Gregg Easterbrook in Sunday’s New York Times shocked me with its stupid jingoism.

As an Englishman, because of the close ties of history, culture and language, I probably have more in common with Americans than I do with other Europeans, although European nations are bound together by religious, cultural and historical ties that go back more than 2000 years.

But then America’s roots too are in Europe.

You may now be bigger and stronger than the parents from whom you sprang, but just as parents and children need each other (spiritually, emotionally and materially), so too do Europe and America.

We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes and rivalries of the 20th Century, which is where Mr Easterbrooks rhetoric would lead us, but need to work together in creating a free, fair, peaceful, prosperous, and above all, SUSTAINABLE global order.
