Death crash driver more worried about car
By Nigel Bunyan

A MOTORIST who lamented the damage to his car while the teenage pedestrian he had struck lay dying was yesterday facing a jail sentence.

Mark Schofield, 25, hit Stephen Charlson, 19, as he overtook another car in his Audi 80 sports coupe, which has a top speed of 148mph, on the High Street at Uppermill, near Oldham, Greater Manchester. But instead of helping to treat the teenager he looked at the V-shaped dent in his bonnet and said: "Oh, look what he's done to my car."

John Hudson, 20, who witnessed the accident, recalled the Audi being "highly revved". He said: "As I was kneeling down I had my back to the car. The driver got out and said, 'It's times like these when you wish you were fully comp.' "

Mr Charlson, who had been celebrating his birthday with friends, died two hours after the accident from multiple injuries. Yesterday, Schofield, of Middleton, near Rochdale, Greater Manchester, showed no emotion as a jury convicted him of causing death by dangerous driving. He will be sentenced on April 13.

After the hearing at Minshull Crown Court, Manchester, one of Mr Charlson's friends, David Bull, 20, said: "That driver treated Stephen as if he had run over a rabbit . . . His attitude just beggared belief."

Schofield was remanded in custody pending sentence.
