Dear Polly,

How can such a horrific situation, on such a horrific scale, arise in a "civilised society"?

Answer: It cannot.

Conclusion: We do not live in a civilised society.

Unfortunately, we are unable to recognise just what a self-created shit hole we do live in.

But were things any better in the past?

Probably not. On the whole, probably a darn sight worse.

How could it happen? How could parents be unjustly accused and convicted of harming and even killing their own children . . . . ?!

All you need is alienated mass consumer society, just like ours, where the judgement of strangers, so-called experts, is given more credence than the judgement of those (our largely non-existent family and community) who know us.

Our society is rotten at its core. And unless we (you and I, not governments) create an alternative, it, and possibly our whole species (Homo sapiens indeed!) is unlikely to survive the present century.
