Dear Sir/Madam,

In today's Politics section, you refer to what the White House calls its "long-term energy plan" (News Analysis: Bush Faces Quandaries of Economy and Energy, March 21, 2001).

What few people seem to realise is that the only realistic "long-term energy plan" will have to be based on renewable sources of energy, which in turn will require drastic reductions in energy consumption and a radical reassessment of modern economic philosophy and the materialistic values on which it is based.

This would be a tough one for Al Gore, who at least recognises the problem, if not its magnitude and urgency. George W. Bush, on the other hand, doesn't even seem to realise that we have a problem - of achieving
sustainability on a finite and vulnerable planet as quickly as possible.
