Dear Sir/Madam,

I cannot think of anything worse than one day to be cursed by one's own children and grandchildren. Yet this will surely be the consequence of President Bush's Energy policy  (Bush, in Reversal, Won't Seek Cut in Emissions of Carbon Dioxide, March 14, 2001; Bush Defends Emissions Stance; March 15 2001).

Your astronauts have given us the most beautiful photos of our planet, suspended like a jewel in the inky blackness of space, her finiteness and vulnerability obvious to all. Yet to judge from your behaviour, one would think that America were the only nation on Earth.

If it were there would be no urgent problem. But Americans represent just 5 percent of the world's population!

The rest of the world is eagerly following your example, which can only lead to the disruption of our planet's climate and life-supporting ecosystems.

America, for heaven's sake wake up!!

We need you to lead us away from this madness, not further into it!
