Dear Sir/Madam,

What I found most shocking about your report on the headmaster who hit disabled students in his charge was not so much HIS behaviour, but that of the other members of staff, not one of whom had the courage to face up to or report him (Head who hit disabled students is jailed, Saturday 21 April 2001).

We like to think that what happened in Nazi Germany could not and could never happen in Britain. Such behaviour suggests that it could. One might argue that what the Nazi's did was far worse, which is true. But so was the penalty for speaking out, which was liable to affect not only one's self but also one's family, and thus required an inordinate amount of courage.

Should the other members of staff not also be in court answering for their cowardice and collective lack of responsibility towards their pupils?
